My background

A couple of years after starting my music education with piano group lessons and individual violin lessons (that my parents remind me from time to time that they had to force me to go), my parents took me to a newly founded children's orchestra in our hometown. From that moment and for eight years after, every Thursday at 4 p.m., I went to violin group lessons together with six other children of similar age and level. The classes were based on group technical exercises, chamber music, ear training, music theory, and we prepared our individual pieces and scales for the end of the year ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) exams.

After playing violin for 6 years, I switched to the viola because of my teacher, who convinced me by telling me that my personality matched more the viola than the violin (thinking back, I think he might just have wanted to have a viola player in the orchestra!). It wasn't until I was 17 and I had moved to Norway with my family, that I started my individual lessons in viola.

In recent years I have realised that learning music in this kind of setting really taught me the importance of respect, listening, and collaboration. I believe these are essential to the development of oneself in the multicultural society we live in, and it set the grounds not only for my teaching philosophy, but also my beliefs about what the music world should look like.

My experience and philosophy

I have a bachelor’s in music pedagogy and viola performance from the University of Stavanger, and I have been working in a music school as a violin teacher teaching both in individual and group settings, as well as music theory. I have taught violin and viola to students of very different levels and ages, from young new beginners that are making music for the first time to adult learners getting back to playing after a few years. I have also worked with adult beginners and children that have been playing for a few years already. Teaching in the music school gave me a chance not only to teach children of different ages and backgrounds, but it also taught me to adapt to the different students and tailor my teaching and methods to their needs and goals. The past couple years I have also participated in various teaching workshops where I have learned about different music methods such as Dalcroze, Colour Strings, and Kodaly.

At the moment, I’m doing my masters in viola performance in Maastricht University. Throughout my studies I’ve taken part of a number of festivals and chamber music courses such as Voksenåsen summer Academy in Oslo, Båstad Chamber music festival in Sweden and String Quartet course organised by the Marmen quartet, among others. Playing chamber music with various ensembles has helped med develop musically and technically, and I have gotten a chance to explore and understand music in its very collaborative essence. I have learned different rehearsal techniques and strategies that have added to my teaching toolbox. Moreover, I’ve learned values and skills such as respect, trust, responsibility, creativity, communication, and flexibility that I strongly believe should be taught from a young age while learning to play an instrument and playing with others.
